# Devlog: the small rules that keep Lumi Garden calm

> Lumi Garden is a merge game without pressure. Here are the design choices behind that: a greenhouse you cannot lose, dew that refills while you are away, daily goals with no streaks, and moon-night orders that simply fade if you miss them.

Merge games are easy to make stressful. Energy runs out at the worst moment, timers nag, missing a day breaks a streak. When we built Lumi Garden we wanted the opposite: a greenhouse you can open for five minutes before bed and close without feeling you owe it anything. This devlog collects the small rules that make that work.

## The greenhouse has no fail state

In the main greenhouse you can never lose. There is no timer on the board and no game over. You tap a generator, merge matching items, and deliver orders to visiting animals. If the board fills up, the game simply tells you it is full and suggests merging or selling something. Nothing breaks and nothing is taken away.

Even when you harvest a flower pot onto a full board, the harvest is not lost: it is turned into gold leaves instead.

The optional Flower Field Night levels are different on purpose. They are small puzzles with a move limit, and you can run out of moves. But they are a side room, not the house. Losing one only offers a restart, and Yingying, the little firefly spirit, can walk you through where the attempt went wrong.

## Dew refills while you are away

Generators cost one drop of dew per tap. Dew is the only limit in the game, and we wanted it to feel like weather rather than a meter you have to fight.

- One drop comes back every two minutes, including while the game is closed. Come back after a while and your dew has quietly refilled, up to the cap.
- Delivering orders gives some dew back.
- Petting Yingying gives a drop, a few times a day.
- Yingying's fourth form raises the dew cap from 100 to 120.

When dew does run out, the message says how it refills and offers to wait. Waiting is a real option, not a trap.

## Daily goals without streaks

There are small daily goals that refresh at midnight. The text that introduces them says it plainly: missing a day does not cost you anything. There are no streak counters, no "come back tomorrow or lose your bonus", and nothing that decays while you are gone.

We think streaks turn a hobby into an obligation. A calm game should welcome you back after a week away exactly as warmly as after a day.

## Moon-night orders expire without penalty

From the third chapter, an order will sometimes arrive with a moon on it. Moon-night orders have a ten-minute window and pay double. That is the only timed thing in the greenhouse, and we kept it gentle:

- They appear only occasionally, about one in five new orders, and never while you are being given an easy order.
- If one expires, the game shows a short note that it is okay, and a new order takes its place.
- Nothing else is lost: no reputation, no items, no dew.

It adds a small spark of "oh, a good one" without punishing you for being busy.

## Space to breathe

A few other choices come from the same idea:

- **A storage shelf.** Six slots where you can tuck items away when the board feels crowded, instead of being forced to sell.
- **Flower pots.** You plant a bud and come back later to a grown flower. It is progress that happens while you are not playing.
- **Yingying's forms.** Yingying grows through five forms as you deliver orders. Later forms add soft perks, like an occasional small gift on the board, rather than new demands.
- **Time-aware greetings.** If you open the game late at night, Yingying might tell you it is late and you should rest. A game should be allowed to say goodnight.

## What we left out

Just as important is what is not there: no lives, no countdown on the main board, no login calendar, no leaderboards, and no penalty for closing the tab mid-merge. Your board stays exactly as you left it.

## What is next

Lumi Garden now saves to your Glowbox account if you sign in, so your greenhouse follows you between devices. We will keep adding to it with the same rule in mind: every new feature should make the greenhouse a nicer place to be, never a place you feel you have to check on.

## FAQ

**Can you lose in Lumi Garden?**

Not in the main greenhouse. There is no timer or game over there. The optional Flower Field Night levels have a move limit, but you can restart them freely.

**How fast does dew refill?**

One drop every two minutes, including while the game is closed, up to the cap of 100 (120 with Yingying's fourth form).

**What happens if a moon-night order expires?**

Nothing bad. A short note says it is fine and a new order takes its place.
